Eco-Supermileage Racing Team - UIUC

August 2025 - Present

Team member of the mechanical subteam, focusing on the steering and braking system of the “car”. I’m working on the wheel hubs and brake mount to increase overall racing efficiency. New components that I have to create are first computer-aided designed with Autodesk Fusion360, then 3D printed for physical scale, and finally manufactured for the building process. As of now, most pieces are in their final computer design stage. Learned basic Finite Element Analysis to evaluate whether each component would retain shape and strength once put in place. Currently learning to earn certification for mill and lathe machines to use to manufacture designed pieces.

This is the revised brake mount that I designed for the 2026 version of our car. Once this was 3D printed, we saw small flaws in the sizing, so that will be adjusted once manufacturing the component starts.

This is a rack and pinion system where the steering wheel is attached to the gear, which spins the rod, spinning the two front wheels, allowing the car to steer. I made small changes in the design to ensure smoother steering and more range of motion.

This is how the final product is expected to appear, from a general perspective. The driver is essentially sleeping to reduce air drag and allow for a faster ride.
